girlinshirt.: Misconceptions of your twenty-somethings. →
In turning another miserable year older I took a step back and thought ‘holy shit y’all…I’m mid-twenties & it isn’t anything like the movies said! LIFE I DEMAND A REFUND’. Because REALLY?! Is this a joke? These are supposed to be the years I attend fancy parties & have men banging down my…
take heart: I dreamed/despaired the same things and honestly, 22-28 SUCKED LIKE HOLY HELL, but 29 has been pretty great!! Constant Doubt has less pull; empathy and patience arrive more easily. <3
I’ve also heard a thing about how adult brains don’t finish completely forming until we are around 24, which I think has a lot to do with all of the existential feelings we eat.
If you consider the conventional American trajectory, we are all in this hyper-scheduled, hyper-patterned way of life for at least 20 years while our brains and bodies are also trying to absorb constant change. School, seasons, three months of limbo, repeat. times 20. and there’s no warning or preparation for when college/university/dumb job/parents vomit us up on the sidewalk. the universe is just kind of like, “Peace! good luck with that, brah”
I think it’s less important to stress over the itinerary and pinpointed expectations of your life, and more important to remember that it gets a little easier, that with experiencing ridiculous happiness and paralyzing depression also comes immense self-awareness. Plans and goals aren’t any more clear, but we re-train ourselves, as we did for the previous 20+ years, to less anxiously bob around in that limbo. Like when you’re 15 and your thoughts revolve around the sweater you’re wearing or that kid who asks you what day it is in math class (It’s October Third) VS when you’re 20 and you give a lot less of a fuck about those things—it’s not because your life turned around and you are suddenly The Shit. It’s because you had a couple rounds and they’re just a little easier each time they come.
but anyway, how old is too old to shop at Forever21? Do I have to go from the Mossimo section to the Merona section at target now? and apparently, your late-20’s is an excellent time to invest in a lint roller.
HANG IN THERE, BEAUTIES!
